The Accredited Exercise Physiologists at South Coast Sports Medicine are an integral part of the Sports Medicine team, with extensive knowledge about the effects of exercise on the musculoskeletal system. Tertiary trained over at least 4 years, their understanding of exercise effects for individual patients and their chronic conditions is evidence-based and extensive.

They are able to prescribe a course of exercise for fitness, illnesses or rehabilitation. This includes treating medical conditions such as obesity, arthritis, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, depression, asthma and cardiovascular diseases. When appropriate, it should be possible for many patients to be progressed to, for example, external personal training or group fitness providers who lack the depth of knowledge and training in chronic conditions.

Working alongside doctors, physiotherapist, nutritionist and other allied health professionals they aim to have a whole body approach in treating and managing your symptoms.

The exercise approach taken by our Exercise Physiologists is based on the latest research, prescribing exercise programs based on biochemical movements, motor control, cardiovascular and metabolic principles. Our in-house rehabilitation gym is also available for casual use after having a EP appointment to continue your prescribed exercises. Many patients achieve successful outcomes with a home-based program, or a review of their existing exercise program.

John Toomey
Managing Director
Accredited Exercise Physiologist

MSc (HMES), BSc (HMES), Dip. Ed, ESSAM

John followed his Bachelor of Science with a Masters degree in Exercise Rehabilitation and a Diploma of Education. With over 15 years experience in the health & fitness industry, including personal training, and facility management, he managed a successful exercise physiology business in Albany for 4 years before becoming part owner and director of South Coast Sports Medicine.

John has special interests in corrective exercise for posture and core strength, rehabilitation of chronic and overuse injuries, sport-specific biomechanical assessment and running gait analysis and improvement. He is a Corrective Exercise Specialist, Community Running Coach, Orienteering Coach and Triathlon Coach. In his spare time he is an active member and committee member of several local sporting clubs and spends time being active outdoors with his young family.

John is a former professional-licensed triathlete and elite orienteer and has extensive experience in running, mountain biking, road cycling, surf lifesaving, paddling and adventure racing and has previously gained coaching qualifications in volleyball, badminton and hockey.

Ingrid Fuhrmann
Accredited Exercise Physiologist


Ingrid completed her Bachelor of Physical Education at University of Sao Paulo (Brazil), before moving to Australia in 2005. She started working in the Fitness Industry on 2006 in gyms around Perth and Margaret River.

In 2018 Ingrid completed a Masters of Clinical Exercise Physiology at Charles Sturt University and undertook practicum experience with musculoskeletal, cardiac, cancer and neurological conditions at various locations, including Fiona Stanley Hospital and ECU.

With over 10 years of experience with group fitness classes and personal training, Ingrid has special interest in seniors population, sports rehab, injury prevention and functional training. Despite the recent graduation as Exercise Physiologist, she has been working in the rehab area with other Exercise Physiologists for the past 5 years.

Ingrid was a rower at competitive levels during university and has been a passionate mountain bike rider for the last 8 years.

Jake Duperouzel
Accredited Exercise Physiologist

BSc(Exer&SprtsSc), BSc(ExerSc&Rehab), ESSAM

Originally from York, Jake moved to Perth to complete his study. He graduated from Edith Cowan University with a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sport Science as well as Exercise and Rehabilitation Science. During his studies, Jake had exposure to a broad range of conditions including metabolic, cardiorespiratory, neurological and musculoskeletal providing exercise for both treatment and management. During his time working within the Albany and Denmark community Jake has developed interest in working with the elderly and neurological conditions.

Jake enjoys the outdoors, surfing and cycling. Over the past years Jake has traveled interstate and overseas to coach and compete, representing Australia and WA for water skiing.

A warm up routine should be more than a bit of a jog and some static stretches - think about dynamic stretches too, for the following reasons:

💪 Increasing neural drive - Imagine if your muscle has lots of nerve fibres, but in normal activity, it only has, say, 30% of them working. For speed and power (as in a game of footy) we need all of those nerve fibres firing, activating the muscle to its full potential.

💪Activating stabilising muscles - reduces the risk of injury by making joints stable and move in the correct pattern

💪Practice movement patterns - "Practice makes perfect", so it would be commonsense to include these in your warm up.
